About us
We believe every young person deserves a chance to thrive
Momentum Mentoring was built around a simple belief: every young person has potential, but sometimes they need the right person to help them find it. For some young people, the starting point is education or confidence. For others, it might be finding an interest, activity or “spark” that gives them a reason to engage.
Our story
Built on direct experience, driven by purpose
Momentum Mentoring was founded by Dave, who works directly with young people and understands that one approach doesn't work for everyone.
A big part of mentoring is taking the time to discover what makes each young person tick — what they're interested in, what they're good at, what they enjoy and what might give them a reason to engage.
That could be sport, the gym, gaming, music, being outdoors, cars, creativity or something completely different. The interest itself isn't the goal. It's the opportunity it creates to build trust, start conversations and develop a positive relationship. From that initial spark, mentoring can build momentum — helping a young person become more engaged, develop confidence, explore goals and begin to think differently about what they can achieve.
Our mission
Our mission is simple: find the spark that gives each young person a reason to engage, then build the momentum from there.
Every young person is different. We take time to discover what interests them, what they enjoy, what they're good at and what makes them tick.
That might be sport, the gym, gaming, music, being outdoors, creativity or something completely different. These interests can be the starting point for building trust, having conversations and developing a genuine relationship.
We don't want young people to feel like they're being treated as another problem to fix or another lesson to sit through. We want to get to know them first, understand who they are and find something they can connect with.
Before mentoring begins, Dave takes time to speak with the parent or carer, followed by a free, informal meeting with the parent, young person and Dave in a safe and relaxed environment. There is no pressure to talk about challenges. It's simply about meeting each other and seeing whether the relationship feels right.
From there, we can find the spark and build the momentum.
Consistency
Showing up, every session, every week. Young people who have experienced instability need to know that someone reliable is there for them — and will keep being there.
Respect
Meeting young people where they are, without judgement and without pressure. Every young person deserves to be heard, taken seriously, and treated with dignity.
Honesty
Being clear about what mentoring can and can't do. Setting realistic expectations, following through on commitments, and being transparent with families and schools throughout.
Collaboration
Working alongside families, schools, and other professionals — not in isolation. The best outcomes happen when everyone involved in a young person's life is pulling in the same direction.
How we work
Mentoring that goes beyond the session
Mentoring isn't simply about turning up for an hour. It's about building a genuine relationship and getting to know the young person as an individual.
Dave takes time to discover their interests, strengths, personality and what motivates them. Sometimes the starting point is sport, the gym, gaming, music, being outdoors, or something completely different. Finding that spark can create a reason to engage and a natural way to build trust and conversation.
The aim isn't to make a young person feel like they're sitting with another teacher or being asked what's wrong with them. It's about meeting them where they are, building a relationship and helping them find something they can connect with. From that starting point, mentoring can build momentum and open up conversations around confidence, education, goals and the future.
